Tuesday 11th transit to Rome

Freaky date - I expect that as the US wakes up we will see some commemorative stuff on TV.

We arrived in Rome airport this morning - very early & caught the train up to Rome.  (The airport is down on the coast about 30 Kms out of central Rome.)  We sat on the train with a lovely couple & their 1y.o. son Luca.  They're from Hobart. - believe it or not! She is Italian & they were visiting relatives in the Fiumicino area. They were catching the train up to Rome to then link into a fast inter-city train to Milan - to visit more relatives.  They were telling us that Rome has been in the high 30s & into the 40s over the last few weeks.  And we can believe it - we saw a roadside weather station saying it was 36 degrees.

Our hotel (Hotel Canada) is about 600 m from the main train terminus so we decided to walk to the hotel.  Nice place - typically European - small - very clean & comfortable for us.  Given how early it was the room was unavailable (as we expected) so we left our bags & went touring - despite barely sleeping all night.  I knew that we were close to a metro station - 1 block away, so we went & bought a 3 day pass & have already used it 4 times. After barely using public transport in Australia we've been on & off trains in Singapore & here like regulars.

As is typical of having your time clock out of whack, we were eating pizza at 10am - as it was about 5 pm in Adelaide.  But a long walk to a few places should help the body clock to adjust.  So we went and sussed out the Colosseum & the forum - will go back tomorrow & probably do a guided tour to really get to see parts of it that you can only do & fully understand with a guide.
